According to the plumber’s report, the water damage was caused by a burst old copper pipe and a failed soldered 90-degree angle fitting located in the attic. The pipe was previously used to supply a roof-mounted swamp cooler, which has since been removed and replaced with an AC unit. However, the supply copper pipe was left active and plugged at the top of the roof.
Category of Water Loss: CAT 3
The water loss is classified as Category 3 due to the location of the leak in the attic. Insulation materials fell and mixed with the standing water, potentially introducing significant contaminants. Category 3 water, also known as “black water,” may contain harmful bacteria, chemicals, or other hazardous materials. It is critical to handle this type of water damage with caution due to the significant health risks it poses.
